DO NOT install Direct X 8.1...

It was released today. I must have been one of the first people to d/l and install it, so I also get the dubious distinction to be one of the first people to format my comp because of it!!! Woo-who!!!

FUCK YOU LITTLE BILL

This thing has turned both of my PC?s to shit, I now get ?pauses? during all the games that I play, from every emulator to every PC game I can think of? these aren?t screen freezing pauses, but rather little hick-ups that occur every few minutes (and it isn?t driver company specific either, both my GeFore2MX (NVidia) and Radeon (ATI) comps fuck up on it).

Do not install it, you have been warned?

Oh and those that already have XP ther is no need to install it, XP already has 8.1 (even if the one just released has a higher build #)

I guess I have 8.1 then? I have XP.

Ordinarily I wouldn't upgrade it anyway. From now on I don't upgrade unless something is broken, thanks to the newest IE.

actually, xp doesnt have 8.1, it has directx va. its a different build of 8.1 [img]images/smiles/icon_eek.gif[/img]

That's what I said (just not in those words) if you do upgrade on xp you will not see any differences not even in the file version. Also MS themselves said 8.1 is no different than the one xp ships with.

The bumps in the frame rate seem to be related to ICQ, when I shut it off (using the close button, not simply disconneting)they stop completely... is ICQ accessing the net even when it's down in the taskbar? Even when I'm "disconnected"?

This is strange though, as I NEVER had this problem with 8.0a... I guess it has something to do with the way the new code works (8.1 was completely rewritten)... at least it seems to have been solved, I played Nebula for ~2hours without a single drop from 100%, where before I couldn't go 3 minutes... time will tell though

My other games seem to be working like normal again too...

Hehe, i didn't even check out DX8.1. I don't usually bother with DX. The last version i installed was version 8, upgrading from version 6 or 7, not sure which. I think it was 6. I only installed it because Kawaks or some emu needed it to run properly. To tell the truth, i saw absolutely no difference between the 2 DXs i installed :P

even Xega lies when it says you need DX8...
