A Sign Of The Times: Game Over For SNK
Nov 01, 2001
It's often been said, nowadays, that 2D gaming is dead and despite this attitude, there have been hardy companies still pushing out the 2D love, whether in the form of traditional vertical scrolling 2D shooters, or fast-paced 2D fighting games. No company has stuck to their 2D ways and have been faithful to it's hardcore 2D fanbase than SNK. It is indeed a sad day today, for SNK of Japan has officially announced that it is closing its doors after over 20 years in the industry on their official Neo Geo website.
Although many won't find the news surprising at all, fans, including myself, we're hoping SNK would survive to fight the good 2D fight for quite some time. Who can forget such memorable games like Ikari Warriors, Samurai Showdown, Pulstar, the Fatal Fury series, the King Of Fighters series, and of course, the Metal Slug series. Although SNK is officially dead, the right's to the Neo Geo products have been bought and there has been word that support for the good-old Neo Geo MVS arcade system may continue. Here's the official word from the Neo Geo homepage:
Dear All NEOGEO fans/customers,
It is with deepest grief that In the Autumn of 2001, SNK will close the company history in its business. It was all of your favor and encouragement which made our passion running to make better games for SNK fans. We'd like to take this opportunity to thank and everyone of you for your continuous help and assistance rendered to SNK since its inocorporation in Japan July in 1978.
Without your support, SNK Corporaton would not have been possible throughout 23 yers of operation. With all our heart-felt gratitude, thank you once again!"
