Am I stupid?

Postby adidas on Wed Sep 25, 2002 10:31 pm

The company that I work for, that has fucked me over in more than one way in the past, is moving 30 miles away from where they are now. I've been looking for work.... and I found it. This is my first week working there. It's a place where more than one of my co-workers have worked before, or plan on going to. They're in basically the same line of business.

The product line is where the similarities end. The new place is not moving anytime soon, in fact they moved into a new building only two months ago. It's high-tech right down to the bathrooms.

The pay is potentially greater at the new job, it's a much bigger company with (I assume) higher earnings. There is room for advancement, there are a lot of different positions that you could potentially fill. There is an IT department, managerial positions, etc.

I know two people at the new place. A friend of mine and his girlfriend both work there. From what I hear from them there is a lot of 'he said, she said' that goes around. So I don't really talk to anyone... I just let everyone else go about their business, I might give them the occasional friendly nod.

Everything is computer driven there! Everything! Although you may not think so, I have really begun to hate computers over the last few months. I have never been keen on working on them either. I've known that since my first job where I had to use them all day.

There is a huge (and I mean friggin HUGE) conveyer that goes around the whole building. Eventually boxed up parts get barcoded and comes down to the end of the rollers where I am. I scan a barcode on the box, put a UPS label and packing list on it, then send it on its way. B-O-R-I-N-G.

You may as well forget about taking a breather unless it's a designated break time. I don't have time for that with 1000+ packages a day.

The hours are tough for someone who is trying to go to college too, they are on mandatory over time: 7:00-5:30 weekdays with a half a day on Saturday.

Back to the positive, the profit sharing plan they have in place is pretty good. 15% of your annual salary, and it starts gaining interest immediately. You have to stay seven years to be 'vested' and be entitled to 100% of the money in that account. The benefits aren't bad otherwise, either.

So what's so bad about my old job? It's dirty, there isn't room for advancement, I have to lift heavy boxes, my pay will probably top out at much less than it would if I were to stay at the new job. There is no profit sharing or 401(k), and of course they're moving 30 miles away (that's 60 miles a day driving for those keeping track.)

What's good? I don't have to stay on the computer all day, my hours are perfect for going to school in the evenings, I can talk to anyone there without fear of getting wrapped up in some long-lasting grudge match. Most of all I don't mind getting up in the morning to go there. I'm not a nameless drone, and every day is going to be somewhat different.

How relaxed is the environment? I sit in the office for an hour every morning drinking coffee with the supervisors, just talking. When the general manager finally shows up we all slip out the door into the shop. Don't think we still don't get work done though, we certainly do.

I have a friend that works there (the old job) that has a standing invitation to come work at the place where I just started. She would be making $15,000 a year more to start. She never has gone there, I guess up until now I never understood why.

I don't like this new job. I never look forward to going to work... and today was only my third day. I guess that's no way to spend the next 6-8 years of my life until I get my bachelor's (note: I'm going part-time, obviously.)

It was a difficult decision, but I'm going back to my old back breaking, dirty, low paying, dead end job.

[Lately whenever I have to sort my thoughts out I've been writing them down.... I guess that's a side effect of English Composition class. If anyone actually read this I'd be surprised :P It just helps straighten me out and makes me feel better.]

Dude I've read War and Peace in less time than it took to get through that post!

Its important to be at least relatively happy in your job though. If thats the decision that will keep you happy then go for it.

Make sure you think about it though, maybe give the new one a chance? Is there any time limit on going back to your old job?

Honestly, I don't know what I want. I have until Friday to decide what to do (that will be the last day of my 'vacation') Two people whose opinions I value very much told me I should go with the new job... one of those people is my grandfather who I have never had a bad piece of advice from.

So now maybe I made a mistake? I actually was supposed to go for a physical today (requirement of the new job) which I skipped out on. The appointment was for 4:00, so I left work at 3:50 and decided that I was never going back.... oops.

Maybe I'll go back tomorrow and give some sort of excuse as to why I didn't go? School is always a good one, or maybe I'll take my friend's advice and tell them my hot water heater broke and was leaking everywhere. I had to fix it, I don't want that carpeting ruined in the basement ;)

So the one big reason you don?t like the new job is because of a computer? I probably would stay with the new one (plus it?s closer and you get more $$$$)!

Money isnt everything.

Yeah thats a good excuse Ad, being as Timesplitters2 comes out tomorrow I'm considering using the old 'had to wait for the builders to come and fix up my bathroom' excuse.

Then again, I could use the money. Dilema!

An important lesson I learned at a young age.

The reason I don't like the job is because of the computer? That's one of them.

ok here is ur situation

from where im at, soem downtown condiums/apartemnts can go as high as 2000 a MONTH!!! in most cases u probbaly have no choice but go for the high paying job.

your old job seems like a killer to do..however u did say u dont havr to stay in 1 spot all day..whcih is good..and probably good to relieve boredom and of course stress.

then again, this new job seems like a good step for you..which is much better( and cleaner?) but as u put it, the people there will act like drones for most of their lives if they want.

my guess is u probbaly dont want to work their forever so use that as a step-ladder and see if anything comes up....looks REAL good on a resume abd bosses like "hard workers"

opps--heh-heh its payday..shit this god-awful weather..talk to u soon in OH SO pleasent barrie,ont

That is what I've decided on. Almost exactly. It's a good stepping stone.

The people DO act like drones; I hate jobs like that. They don't really get along either, so I talk to no one. The only exception being the two people that I knew from before I took the job.

Slightly more money, a lot less driving. A little more stress, a lot less fun... but I'm taking it. It's official.

It took two weeks of flip-flopping to come to that decision :?

You should have gone for Oakley sandals instead ;)

I just quit your job!! mwaahahahaha

Postby Pdaimaoh on Wed Oct 30, 2002 8:26 am

holy shit

I worked in shipping for marsala manufacturing, producer and distributor of cheap ass jewelry!

it is EXACTLY what you described, except for the conveyor, but the bullshit profit sharing, the bullshit politics, it's the same

and the packing lists
cept there were fedex labels, too...

there was plenty of room for advancement, I replaced a full timer just a few months after starting there, moved up to a position managing between 2 and 6 other people on a daily basis

and made the exact same wage as every other peon that was hired in on any given day and couldn't even put a piece of tape on a cardboard box!

asked for a raise a couple months ago and got denied
told them last week would be the last week I do my job unless they relegate me back to peon duties or pay me for my current duties

mandatory overtime, especially on thursday and friday

they refused, and the supervisor said he didn't think my position was really different than a peon position
then when he asked three other semi-qualified peons to take it over, they ran like hell

seemed like the right time to leave 'em!

btw
whenever you see kohl's having an 80% off sale on their crappy body ornaments, realize that they are STILL MAKING nearly 700% profit....

heh
and sadly, if you see a nice piece at saks
you can probably get the same thing at Kmart for 200 bucks less with the only difference being the kind of packaging (a blue card versus a shiny cardboard box with clear plastic window..)

And I thought I was the only one around here that has these type of crappy jobs that they could train a monkey to do...I went back to my old job around a month ago, I was getting jerked around too much. I figured if I'm going to get jerked around I might as well be amongst friends.

OT: Damn, it's been a long time since you've posted here.

Postby Pdaimaoh on Wed Oct 30, 2002 11:13 pm

train a monkey? good god, I think I DID do that for a few weeks

does anyone remember my 'broken record' stuff?

it was seriously like that for too long! I mean, to the same people!!!!!!

I did write up a few prints for a machine to automate much of the low end work, but I'll be damned if I give THAT away!

maybe to a competitor!

too bad I don't have the flow to take half a year off

maybe just two months, hehe

OT:it's been shorter than it was going to be
other than visiting my family, I wasn't going to get my own connection for another year and a half

...but I missed all the free porn.

BTTT: I also went back to my old 'job' which I was sorta hoping to stop doing. I wish I hadn't, I forgot how mean I gotta be to stay ahead.

Bah!

All that seems so long ago now.

I am looking for a new job now though. Something in the region of £16,500 to £17,000 really. Then I can get me own little place and start saving to do another course.
