Is there a patch or something that will allow Quake 1 the I downloaded from http://www.idsoftware.com to work on my windows XP OS?

the game is NOT very compatible.I have trouble with my sound on my comp with a very ugly on-board soundcard and the game WON't work unless u turn off the sound.
whats the point of playing it without SOUND??
