FTP client with redial feature that WORKS plz

Postby adidas on Mon Sep 03, 2001 1:33 am

I've used quite a few ftp clients, and none of the ones I've used have a redial feature that works correctly.

Bullet Proof FTP
Cute FTP
CuteFTP pro
SmartFTP

none of them does it right.

Yeah, to re-dial my ISPs number, since I'm on a lowly 56k.

You mean sometimes you get disconnected for being idle? I've seen programs that keep your connection alive have you searched places like download.com?

FTP client with redial feature that WORKS plz

I have AOL and when I use Bulletproof it keeps my connection alive as long as BP is connected to an FTP. If it looses that connection for any reason AOL will boot me for inactivity.

I've never used a re-dial option but I wouldnt trust it to do everything properly anyway.

Try WS_FTP and you'll find that doesn't work either

What does redial do? You don't mean a reconnect feature do you?

Those tricks don't work for me, for some reason. The only foolproof method I have of being able to download large files in one day or one night is to have a client that redials on its own.

Yeah, I think every client supports the resume feature, as long as the server does.

I just would like to be able to download something in one night from an ftp while I sleep. As it is, if I have to use an ftp client to download something large (100+ MB), I'll wake up in the morning disconnected from the internet before having downloaded the whole thing.

Maybe I should just make 10 web sites on free space that meta refresh every couple of minutes and send you to the next site. You think that would keep me online?

Good idea, that would keep you online; but surely this wouldn't be necessary as you are downloading anyway?

Some ISPs automatically kick off users after a certain amount of time (Freeserve) so look at your ISP's details closely and see if they do.

that's corrcet..even having a high-cable/dsl suffer the same fate like downloadin a movie as such.heck, even at the CAP site, once u log in, there is no response from the server saturday mornin.Sometimes its so bad you NEVER get on.

i wouldn't trust leavin my modem that long,the longest was a 10meg file on a 28.8 modem.

a fro 100megs,you NEVER get it all one night..maybe a WHOLE day if your lucky as hell..

Hey I've been downloading Dreamcast games over night with a pretty good success rate recently. Downloading at speeds of 8-10kb they can complete in a night but I usually start them when I get home from work.

Annoying thing is recently, on the slower servers my connection seems to drop somehow. I leave the damn computer on all night making noise in the corner of my room only to find to lost the connection after not even downloading half of the first qued file. Now that annoying!! Happened to me last night actually.

I sometimes have the problem of starting out at an acceptable transfer rate, and then having my download drop below 1k per second. That really annoys me.

And as long as whatever I'm using to download files re-dials (Getright) I can get 100 MB while I sleep, trust me I've done it countless times.

Sometimes for some reason that I don't understand you can't use Getright to access an ftp, even with segmented downloading shut off.

Hell yeah I've done the same thing Ad!

With the good reliable ftp addresses I started off using I was getting over 10kb download speeds on my 56k and it would stay connected until it had finished. ITs just not so anymore, I cant get higher than 4kb most of the time and if it drops below 1.5 I usually give up and try somewhere else.

Its an over night deal really. But only if you can find a reliable server.

Right now I have my PC on at home signed into messenger under my girlfriends name so I can check from here at work that its still connected. I started downloading Dave Mirra BMX last night before I went to bed and had 2.5 files left to go when I left for work this morning. I added the 6 or 7 20mb Crazy Taxi 2 files to those and left for work.

By the time I get home at 4:30 I should have Dave Mirra and be the majority of the way into CT2. Hopefully should have CT2 by about 7 or 8pm. Cool!

That will take me up to the grand total of 8 games downloaded with my lowly 56k modem. Not as scary as you thought eh were?

I've gotten nearly 2000 MAME since yesterday, tomorrow I start on the bigger games. I'm giving up on DC before even starting as I know I won't be able to burn them right, or maybe I will be able to but I can't be bothered to download a massive game just to be disappointed. Anyway you could get that tiny Namco Classics to me Adidas?

Damian man thats not the attitude!

Try a smaller game like Evangelion, Crazy Taxi 2, Virtua Cop 2 or something like that.

Just because your SSF2 was corrupt doesnt mean that they will all be like that. Stop being defeatist and pirate the fuck out of those games. I only have a real budget external HP CD Writer. No sub code support or any of that crap and it writes these games perfectly for me. Give it a go, nothing to lose if you download while you sleep.

As I said in another post somewhere. I got 2 games in one day more or less the other day.

Got Dave Mirra over night and Crazy Taxi 2 while I was at work. Came home and there they were!! Whata touch!!
