Build a gaming PC for $500

Postby Silverhaze on Mon Oct 31, 2005 5:43 pm

Spotted this little article some people might like to take a look at. I wish I'd seen something like this before I got mine but what the hey?? When I start my new job and get settled I can start upgrading.

2gig of RAM and possibly a 7800GTX if nothing better is out at the time. NExt on my list is an LCD monitor but even that is a way off for a while.

Anyhoo....

http://www.tomshardware.com/howto/20051014/index.html

The site mentions Alienware so I thought I'd check their site out and I laughed my arse off!! Who the hell do they think they are?!?!? Only a serious mug would buy a PC off them.

They also reckon, from looking at the photos, that this puny thing:

Processor
Intel® Celreon® D
Processor 325

Operating System
Microsoft® Windows®
XP Home Edition

Memory
512MB Dual Channel DDR
PC-3200 SDRAM 400MHz

Hard Drive
160GB 7200 RPM
SATA w/8MB Cache

Graphics Processor
Integrated Intel® Graphics
Media Accelerator 900

Sound Card
Integrated 6-Channel Audio
w/ SPDIF and Composite Out

Will run Half Life 2!!! Hahahaha Integrated gfx eh? Sweet

and a bargain from £906!! Fuck that I'll take 2!!!

Regurdless of price, its been a while since any machine with 512mb of RAM has been considered a modern gaming workhorse. Not to mention that there is almost no price difference between a 3000+ and a 3200+ thesedays and only about £30 in it for a 3500+.

Thats without getting started on that Celeron crate, if that was a car i'd be driving the shitmobile to the nearest skip. :P

The article was written earlier this month (before amd's price cut) and was inteded to be a budget system with a lot of possible upgrades such as expanding the memory when more money comes in.

Yeah I thought it was ok for a starting point. I wish my mobo had dual AGP and PCIe slots.

That said though....for my next mobo I would like an SLI enabled dual core ready mobo.

Gotta give the PS3 a run for its money.
