After new Firewall

Postby Silverhaze on Tue Jan 18, 2005 1:25 pm

Ok, like the title says Im looking for a new firewall to go on my old P600.
It currently has an out of date version of Zone Alarm on it which Im am worried is not protecting my PC properly.

I dont want Norton's Firewall as that fucks about with file and printer sharing over my network so I thought I'd ask for your opinions on a decent firewall.

Cheers!

I can heartly recommend Tiny Personal Firewall - yes Sygate is the best, but for a P-600 this program does a brilliant job, consumes stuff all recsources / cpu.

don't worry about the german text on the site - program is in english.

Cheers,

Thanks, thats another program definitely worth a look!!

Zone Alarm has really started playing up. When you check the list of programs within ZA there is a list of 'Unknown Process' entries as long as my bloody arm.
I know for a fact that one of those is Firefox and ZA has started getting into the habit of blocking Firefox for absloutely no reason and without asking me about it too.
I have a vague feeling that it might be because of those speed changes made to Firefox recently. If it makes multiple connections to a website, could ZA be blocking just a few of those connections and making the program run slower?

Thanks for the links! Definitely a weekend task for me. Im too knackered when I get home of an evening to bother installing stuff.

Had a total nightmare trying to install a USB Bluetooth dongle to get the Missus' phone running properly and that failed miserably as I didnt have the correct drivers and couldnt find them anywhere online.
At one point I tried to get them running on the Win98 machine and it totally fucked my network.
Luckily the exe had an uninstall option which fixed it. I nearly pulled my hair out.

Fucking Sygate blocks EVERYTHING!!

Games dont work right, Azureus doesnt work right and it even blocks my PCs from Printer sharing too!!

Yep Ive set all the settings to allow file and printer share but it wont have it.

I uninstalled it on both PCs.

When I click the button that says 'Allow File and Printer sharing' I dont expect to have to switch the firewall off to print from the other computer or open ports and things.

It also blocked both PCs from pinging eachother and all sorts of other little bits of network traffic too and no matter how many times I clicked the 'Do not show me this again' box it still persisted.
