Game dilemma!

OK Im just wondering if anybody else has experienced this. It first happened to me when I put XP on my old PC and tried to play Half Life. It was gone when I put 98 back on there and I thought it was something to do with the speed of the machine.

Now Im using a 2gig athlon Ive decided it isnt speed related but XP related.

When I play some games, examples are Max Payne, Red Faction 2, Unreal Tournament (original) erm...and one or two others too. I seem to get this lag on the controls.

Its like a split second delay between moving the mouse or hitting a movement key and seeing the game respond. Its only very slight but it makes the games really frustrating to play as you continuously move the cursor past what you are trying to shoot all the time.

I have patched the games, updated windows and the GFX card drivers and yet the problem still persists.

Has anybody else had this problem?

I've seen that happen.... its usually that the indexing service is on. from the run dialog type in services.msc and hit enter. Then check if 'Indexing Service' is running. if so - stop it.

Cheers Release I'll try that.

Whats that indexing thing do anyway?

It wasnt running anyway but I started it and then stopped it just in case.

Any other ideas about what could be causing this?

the indexing service is used to speed up file searches on your system.

only other thing I can think of is dodgy drivers for components in your system ?

Wierd, I've never had this problem before on my 2gig p4 with Max Payne UT and HL.

Maybe because my WinXP was factory-installed?

edit: my indexing service is stopped, too.

I should probably get round to upgrading to XP Pro but I seem to remember this problem happening with XP on my old P600.
