Need Help Deleting a Corrupted Folder

Postby neon_sonic on Tue Apr 08, 2003 9:05 pm

Ok, I was extracting a DrumMania sim file from WinRar (I think), when something went wrong and it messed up and put some weird file in the directory it was extracting to. Now, Windows won't let me delete the directory or the file in it (it usually won't even let me open the folder). It keeps giving me this error:

How the heck can I get rid of this thing?

I'm running Windows 2000. I know this is a very n00bish question, but any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If W2K works the same way as win98 then you should be able to press F8 on startup. Keep pressing it repeatedly between the memory check and the windows loading screen. A menu should appear with a number of options like 'Start windows' Windows Safe Mode' 'Step by step configuration' and others.

The option you want is 'Command Prompt only' this will give you a DOS interface in which you should have C:\ there waiting for you.

You want to type

Delete C:\Tim\Cutie Pie DM Mix

Or

Delete C:\Tim

Dont try it just yet though until one of the other guys can confirm this.

There is no command prompt in win2k other than a "command" window.

Usually you can reboot your system and then be able to delete it. If not try opening something with winrar and while in winrar navigate to that directory and see if winrar can delete it.

If that doesn't work then boot into safe mode and try deleting it that way.

Try boot into safe mode like DamianMoran said and try delete the folder there. If it won't let you delete you might have to get a Win98 or pure DOS boot up disk. If you can't get a DOS boot disk anywhere go http://www.bootdisk.com and get one. After you boot into DOS mode simply type: deltree c:\tim (I assume this is the folder where you put the files). Be aware that all the files in folder "tim" will be gone for good.

Ok just to clarify, if neon_sonic is using NTFS then he wont be able to boot into dos or at least if he can he wont be able to access any files. DOS cannot read NTFS with out the proper driver.
