Tip of the day - Backup Regularly

Postby RabidYak on Thu Aug 08, 2002 8:22 pm

I've just learnt a valueble lesson about backing up - Stop scratching your arse and bloody well do it.

The HD in my main PC crashed and burned last night and the drive is fucked to the point of uselessness, taking with it my entire ROM collection (around 3 or 4 gigs, all D/Led on 56k) with it. All without backups because I kept forgetting to buy some rewritable CDs to put the stuff on. I'm currently running the machine on a old 2gb drive with nothing but a bare minimum 98SE installation and the necessary drivers and its going to stay that way for a week or two until i'm sure that it died of its own accord rather then any shinanigans on the part of the rest of my system.

Oh well, shit happens.

:( christ rabidyak..what lousy timing

that is what im going to do the next few days before i go to ontario just in case something goes horribly wrong with this computer when im away to berry.

i tend to do backups anyway.saves space and copy the rom(s) onto the hd that i play regulary

hd-rest in peace.

oh man, mayeb soem soul in this forum will burn some roms for ya to send.its quite a few of them

mu uncle says to avoid this, unplug your computer so nothing will happen to ur COMP...as far as i know, we're still BREATHING oxygen, so he must be full of hot air...

I'm pretty annoyed about it, but at the end of the day I only had most of them for completist purposes and it would probably only take a few days to get back everything I actually played on a regular basis. The complete MAME set will have to wait until the day I eventually get Broadband now, I cant be bothered to start from scratch again with a dial-up.

Come to think about it though, i'm more pissed off about loosing all the hi and nvram files with all my high scores in them more then anything. I can get the games back eventually, but not the time I put into racking up nice scores on them.

While were on the topic, any of you guys know where I might be able to get my mitts on a [ahem] very cheap copy of a program called Hard Drive Mecahnic Deluxe?

High scores? See, you should have submitted the pics in the high score thread :p

Or can none of you top my 'lofty' score in Galaga 88?

Galaga '88? I played that once and went running back to the original. :D

I would still feel like a dirty cheater if I got them all on CD rather then getting them myself, even after getting screwed over by a hard drive crash.

Big thanks for the offer though Damien, its much appreciated.

I'll be up for that once i've got a new HD, althougth youll probably kick my arse. I usually average about 25 or 30k on that with 45-odd being my best.

If were going for multiple games, Sinistar would be good for a laff as an ultra-hard game that nobody would have any specific advantage on.

Damn! Here I thought my score of 76k was shitty so I didn't even take a snap :p

I can do better though, I'm convinced :)

It depends very much so on how you use your PCs resources. A gamers HD is never gonna last as long as a business app users.

I think I remember hearing that the average life of a HD is about 6 years. Maybe as low as 4 for a real hardcore gamer.

I keep my PC on mostly from 9-10am to 12-1am at the weekends and usually from 4:30pm to 11:30pm during the week.

Usually about 3pm - 10pm on weekdays and about 9am - 11pm at weekends, I prefer to leave it on all the time rather then bothering to turn it off between uses and waiting for it to boot every time. I wouldent be surprised if it was windows that went tits-up.com and buggered the FATs and boot sector, it was probably only just short of 2 years old.

I'll be switching to XP for my next HD, just so I can use NTFS as the file system rather then oldhat32.

I keep mine on 24/7, I wonder how that would affect mine?

Yak if you want a slight speed advantage over XP then use Windows 2000, you can use NTFS with that and I find it to be a little faster. Just about everyone who's used both would probably agree
