HUGE NG CD flood on usenet!

Postby Class316 on Thu Jun 12, 2003 1:56 am

alt.binaries.emulators.neogeo

I already got what I wanted:

Iron Clad

Crossed Swords 2

Neo Geo CD Special

Samurai Shodown RPG

The rest I don't care for as they work fine on R0mz. So everyone leech away!!

Unfortunately NG CD Special has no cue, of if anyone would be so kind as to paste that..

You most likely wont need a cue file for it, just use discjuggler and and load the .bin file and burn.

I don't have news group access so if anyone would be kind enough to upload some of these it would be much appreciated.

Sorry to ask such a Newbie question here but I cant abide looking for stuff on the net with these shabby computers at work. It will take the best part of 20 mins most likely.

So....

Whats the difference between the NG arcade board and the NG CD? I know the console NG is the same as the arcade one but I've never touched an NG CD.

Well some of those games were only released on CD. Like class I don't care about the ones that were just rom ports.

So they are exactly the same specs and everything? Just a different format.

The general idea behind the NGCD was to make more money in the home markets by bringing down the fucking ludicrous prices of games, namely by using CDs instead of carts stuffed full of expensive ROM chips to store the poorly formatted data.

Were they went wrong was that they just took the existing arcitecture and game code and shoehorned a CD drive in rather then actually designing a new CD console from the ground up. As the games and hardware they were using were designed for use in a ROM-based environment, they all had hefty loading times because the data was basically in the same bloated format it always had been in and had to be loaded up into memory in small chunks on a regular basis to be acessed rather then just being taken directly from the source at will.

I belive allot, if not all, of the games also stream thier music from the CD rather then using a generator.

Another problem is the CD-ROM it uses. Instead of using faster model, SNK decided to cut back the cost by using 1X CD-ROM. Some people claim they modified it and replace the CD-ROM to faster speed (4X I believe) but the loading time is still very slow.

My friend had one. Loading each fighting stage takes about 1~2 min.

Well all the others have cue files so it is kinda strange that ONE game does not. If you like give the FTP info and I will upload some later on.

In addition to the above mentioned I also downloaded ADK world.

Anyhow, here are some highlights on how NG CDs differed from NG carts:

As stated already, it was mainly done to counter high prices for carts

CD games have better Music than the cart versions

Some games had missing animation frames on CD because of Ram issues

Some games that were released on cart had extras on CD, such as artwork, extra gameplay modes, etc

SNK first released a 1X drive, then later on upgraded to 2X but only in Japan. Loading time was horrid in both cases but this is not an issue when it comes to emulators.

The following games are NG CD only:

Iron Clad

Crossed Swords 2

Neo Geo CD Special

Samurai Shodown RPG (Jap text only)

ADK World

Zentrick

No games newer than Kof 99 were released on NG CD.
