No More Nintendo Game Markdowns

Postby Silverhaze on Thu Jun 22, 2006 12:29 pm

If Satoru Iwata, President of Nintendo gets his way.
This is what he said in a recent corporate briefing:

“We believe that each software should have its own price point depending on its volume, theme, contents or energies and time spent for the development, namely, the development costs,” he commented, continuing by saying that “once the suggested retail price is announced, we should stick to it.”

He went on to say:

“If the suggested retail price of any and all software is marked down in 6 months or 9 months, the customers will learn the cycle and wait for the discounting,” he explained, “which will simply aggravate the decreasing sales of new software.”

I understand his feeling that Nintendo and other publishers feel that they don’t want the perception of their games to be of cheap quality because of the price but it’s still not good for us consumers. You can read more here

why is it good? There are always people who want a particular game right away. My roommate always rushes out to buy the newest EA basketball game, went out and bought the PS2 version of GTA right away and so on.

I on the other hand would wait for the discount. I like to save the most money that I can.

Software isn't the only item that follows this cyclical model. Another example would be PC hardware. If it seems to work, then why alienate the people who would only buy after the price drops (like me?)

It seems that you would maximize your profit by appealing to both sectors, the I-Hafta-Have-It-Now's and the Ill-Wait-Cause-I'm-Cheap's

This is actually something they teach in basic economics.

Fine, they can stick with the same price. It'll just force people to buy used games from local/online stores. Console games price usually stay the same until newer version comes out. Or when the game flat-blows and store try their best to get rid of them. If Nintendo thinks $20 bargain price isn't worth the effort. We can simply buy them used and let the game store make all the profit.

I would love to see a small local/online store willing to stick with the price when they have tons of unwanted games they can't sell.

I'd also like to see a game retailer charge a reasonable price for a second hand game!

All the branches of Game and even the smaller Game Station in the UK rip people off daily. Charging £50 for a new X360 game and then when the person brings it back they get about £25 if they part exchange on a new game or £20 or less if they decide on store credit.

Now, once back on the shelf the shops routinely charge £45 for them.

Well that sucks and its precisely the reason I never part exchange or trade in my games. I use their no questions 10 day money back guarantee and decide in that time whether I like the game or not.
Thats one good thing about Game. I can walk back in there with my game and say 'this is shit' and swap it for something else.

I know I wont be buying many brand new nintendo games but I'll let the other suckers trade em in so I can get em cheaper.
