nVidia unleash the beast!! 8800GTX

Nip over to Tech Report to check out the incredibly powerful card they have just released.

Guru3D has 2 of these things in SLI and scored 15,000 in 3DMark06 which is just

If you want that in real money then FEAR runs at over 60fps at 2560x1600 with 4xAA 16xAF

Ugh. Needs 4 additonal molex power leads and eats up 300watts. This is why waiting for them to make the design more efficient down the line is a good thing. Seen the pics as well? Sodding this is even longer than the 1950 which is already squeezing just into midi tower cases.

I was checking out a couple of the review sites on this thing and anandtech had some screenshots of games running the g80 and older hardware, I swear I couldn't tellt he difference between the different cards.

The main advantage as far as I can tell (besides dx10 support) is the ability to run super high resolutions now, which is great if you have a large hdtv.

Yeah I totally agree with both of you. My 1800XT came close to not fitting in my case. I had to carefully place some cables so Im not sure that thing would fit in. Not that I have PCIe x 16 anyway.

We're waiting for the Crysis and Alan Wake tests to come out before making any further decisions.

Decisions as in a new card? Bad idea at the moment imo. Even getting a top of the line card now is not enough of a performance upgrade to warrent the expenditure. Wait 6 months at least, by then there will be a whole slew of dx10 cards.

No no not at all mate!

By we I was kinda referring to the hardware forum Im a member of. Once those games come out we can get some proper benchmarks.

I heard it wasnt amazing with Crysis. Probably need a quad core and 2 8800s in SLI ;)

A very power processor is needed to get the most from 8800's in SLI. Over at guru3d benchmark's on 3D Mark 06 are reaching bloody high, but the true potential is yet to be seen....

Yeah and its mainly in stupid resolutions. At lower resolutions the X1950XT is still out performing it.

It basically gives you more overhead for higher resolutions that are pretty much wasted unless you're running at least a 24" widescreen and upwards.

I'm building a new PC around January (birthday money), one of these bad boys is definately gonna be on my shopping list. Anything less than a DX10 card right now is just silly.

What happened to your old card?

and why dont you play your xbox very much anymore? Its because you hacked it and games no longer hold a novelty value for you isnt it?

Told you so!

Old card was faulty. Got a refund, which was the same amount the 8800 cost. I've just not been playing much in general recently, need to get back to Zelda at some point as well, although I did finish Crackdown.

Yeah Im just working on the last few achievements. Got the 1 minute increments or whatever its called last night.

The timed ones are hell!

It would be nice to be able to begin a new game really. Hoping for a patch.

Speaking of patches, did you hear about the Dead Rising multiplayer patch? Theres a rumour.
