Microsoft warns software pirates about Vista

Postby Class316 on Thu Oct 05, 2006 4:05 pm

YORK (Reuters) -- Microsoft Corp's upcoming Windows Vista computer operating system will include technology that is designed to prevent pirated copies from fully functioning, the software giant said.

Reduced functionality is already a part of the Windows XP activation process, but Windows Vista will have a reduced functionality mode that is enhanced, Microsoft said on its Web site on Wednesday.

Microsoft said the upcoming releases of Windows Vista and also Windows Server "Longhorn" will be the first two products to ship with the new anti-piracy measures included, but more Microsoft products will eventually adopt the technology.

Windows Vista systems must activate with Microsoft as genuine within 30 days and failure to do so will result in "reduced functionality mode" until successful validation occurs, Microsoft said.

Hahaha yeah probably not far off at all.

I myself might just bite the bullet and buy this mofo though just so I dont have to go through all that pain in the arse authentication crap.

Gonna need the most expensive build to play games on anyway.

Oh who cares. I'll just buy a new PC with Vista already on it. Problem solved. I've never bought an OS separately in my entire life, either way.

I AM looking forward to Vista, however.

It does feel like you are getting a better deal if you buy a preloaded OS but then if you want to be playing games like Crysis and Alan Wake as they are indended be prepared to be buying a Quad core system with at least one DX10 graphics card. Ideally though an SLI or Crossfire setup.

Ridiculous!

I've been using Vista as my main OS since a bit before RC1. Definitely knocks the socks off XP. It does not require the sort of specs you guys are thinking of, hell I have run it on a pc with inbuilt gfx.

No Im only referring to the gaming side of things and taking full advantage of the DX10 features.

Oh by the way...maybe you should talk to Noodles Damian, he told me a friend of his got the enterprise edition and it took about 2 hours to install on his PCs. He said it was totally bloated and inefficient.

First I have heard of that but I havent tried it myself.

His friend is a bit of an arse then :P . 1) All releases of Vista so far have all product editions on, including Ultimate 2) It takes about 20 minutes to install as it uses an image instead of writing files, I suspect he was using a build from last year. As of now with Vista approaching rtm this month I would say that it boots slightly faster than XP and uses memory more efficiently. Expect this to improve slightly.

Ok I tried the WW2007 demo and its by far the best looking WW game I've seen yet!!!! Plays quite nice on the 360 pad but my shots keep going right so I have to aim left of my target.

Definitely going to get it though.
