Where are we headed?

Postby Silverhaze on Tue May 09, 2006 10:17 am

In a recent conversation with Damian he reminded me about a possible face lift for the board sometime ago. Unfortunately nothing happened and the board remained the same.

This place doesnt get nearly enough activity so maybe its time we changed the direction of the board?

I'd appreciate any ideas people might have about how we can get this place to be a bit more popular. Certainly a cosmetic facelift would be very nice although Im not sure how one goes about doing that sort of thing. If anybody has a suggestion on how one might be able to fiddle with the graphics in an application I'd appreciate the input. Or if anybody feels like they might be able to do something with it, that would also be appreciated.

So, general ideas?

I reckon this place should be turned into a gaming board with an emulation forum rather than an emulation board with a gaming forum. More news on up and coming games, screen shots, help and patches and all that sort of thing might help attract new people.

We could have maybe a seperate forum for each system? PS2, Xbox, NGC, 360 and PC and then perhaps a merged forum for other older systems?

Maybe a reviews forum where people can write their own custom reviews of games and post pics when they get them?

I'd just like to gather some ideas from everybody because what we have at the moment is getting kinda stale wouldnt you agree?

Does anybody have any web design experience because I think just making this place look a bit more modern would be a good start.

I think there could look something like that:

Current Consoles and Handhelds

-PC
-Microsoft
-Nintendo
-Sony

Past Consoles and Handhelds

-Past consoles and handhelds
-Vintage PC and other computers

Emulation

-Arcade
-Console, Handheld, and Computer
-Rom sites

General

-General Banter
-PC Applications
-Humour
-Privileged Members

Theres some good ideas there Class, Thanks.

Not sure if we really need the Real Life forum anymore, that could go into the General Banter forum I suppose. Better to have less forums with more in each than more forums with less in each I suppose.

I like the Sony, Nintendo stuff. Saves having a large number of forums covering the various consoles.

I think that Class has got down how the forum should be.

Turning this part of the Internet into a general gaming website would be sweet. Independant reviews at times are much more reliable than ones from sponsored sites so it might drag in more interest.

I don't have any web design skills but if there is anything else you need help with I would be happy to oblige.

Past Consoles And Handhelds

Things like NeoGeo and and the Jaguar, CDi etc? This might be left in the emulation section.... I never met anybody who owned one of those.

As for the games reviews, why not have them on the main page and not on the forum? A HTML will definately look better than the ones we are posting now.

I don't have much time to give the post a proper read through, but I can tell you this:

For some reason I can't access the admin panel for the domain, the user/pass that SHOULD work isn't. Damian is the only one who has the contacts to fix it...

That puts whatever facelift ideas on hold until further notice.

However, if there are any forum changes that we can agree upon, whatever can be changed through the phpbb control panel will be no problem.

I guess there can be one section for past systems. Not too many people are going to use a real A2600, SNES, NES, etc. But maybe others that aren't emu'd well like DC, Xbox, PS1/2, NGC would all be in past. But since most won't be playing them I guess one section is enough. While current will be for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, DS, but split into Nintendo, Sony, and MS.

I guess the Past systems could be:

-Past consoles and handhelds
-Vintage PC

Current systems and emulation could be how I stated.

I'll update

Adidas, I'll send Damian an email and see if I can get any information out of him.

Theres some good ideas coming out in this post. Does anybody know how to get Google to pick up a website more? If PCB appeared higher on a list when people typed certain searches maybe we'd get more people joining?

We would want to appear under "arcade", "emulation", "games", "reviews".

The forum does need a refresh, and from what I can see new software might be on the horizon this summer also.

As for the general site direction, this could be possible but it would need a site wide redesign to accomplish (quite a job).

As for admin access, yes this is an issue at the moment which I shall endeavour to resolve in the next few weeks.

For now you could test out ideas in a folder on here, is FTP access still valid?

I don't know if this was on purpose or not...

But everyone who belongs to the priviledged user group had mod powers by default in the General Banter forum

Class pointed out that he had mod powers and wanted to know why, then ivwshane started editing everyone's posts so I took them away from the group :P

I don't know, maybe Damian meant to set it up that way.

Weird, may have been a glitch too I suppose.

I think I might have a go at downloading some sort of web design package if anybody can give pointers on one that is easy to use and that should allow me to mess around with a local version of this site?

I havent a clue how anything like that is done but it should be fun finding out.

I'll see what they use for news on 3DGPU but I think the whole forum software is completely different.
