Memories of old posts....or not.

Postby Silverhaze on Mon Jan 09, 2006 9:21 pm

Does anybody remember a story which could be a good few years old in which there was talk of these fancy new discs that some Japanese or Chinese firm was developing. They had some pictures of them holding some prototypes and the specs said that they could withstand relatively extreme temperatures, store TBs of information and were about the size of a DVD but were thicker. I seem to remember them being made of glass too.
Oh, the information on the discs would last something silly like 250 years too.

That ring any bells with anybody?

The thread doesent ring a bell, but the topic sounds like HVD. Its a holographic storage medium being developed mostly by slanty eyed folk that is supposed to have 4tb capacity and a 1gb transfer rate.

I wouldent expect to see any holographic format in consumer use for donkeys years, the systems currently being produced for the businesses sector arn't anywhere near that standard yet and they cost about £100 each for discs that you need a £10,000 drive to read.

Sounds familiar. So many of these gimmick formats are announced but few ever really take off.

The next formats, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, might not even take off due to format wars.

I for one am not shelling hundreds of bucks on either one while there's a format war.

I don't think we've ever pruned posts on this server. If you can't find a post via the search function you're probably imagining things :D
