"Sony Music Sued Over Anti-Piracy Software

Jonah Flicker and Amy Phillips report:
In the slow and perhaps inevitable movement towards microchip implantation of the entire human race, Sony BMG Music just took the lead. According to the Washington Post, a class action lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court November 1 alleges that the label's anti-piracy software, installed in several recently released CDs, is harmful to computers.

The suit claims that when a copy-protected CD is loaded onto a hard drive, it installs a hidden program known as a "rootkit," which not only keeps track of the computer's activity, but depletes the drive's resources in the process. So Sony is basically eating up your hard drive space while keeping track of all the porn you watch, just because you actually spent money on a My Morning Jacket CD.

Thanks, guys. This is even better than getting the RIAA to sue us.

The rootkit also makes the computer more susceptible to viruses. Sony falsely states that its copy-protection software can be easily removed, when in reality, getting rid of a rootkit can be damaging.

Here's the crux of the suit, straight from the legal papers: "As a result of Sony's failure to disclose the true nature of the digital rights management (‘DRM') system it uses on its CDs, thousands of computer users have unknowingly infected their computers, and the computers of others, with this surreptitious rootkit. This rootkit has been responsible for conflicts within computer systems, crashes of systems, and other damage."

The suit, which accuses Sony of "fraud, false advertising, trespass, and violation of state and federal statues prohibiting malware, and unauthorized computer tampering," claims that the suspect software has been included on certain Sony BMG Music CDs since this spring. Albums to watch out for include Amerie's Touch, My Morning Jacket's Z Kasabian's Kasabian, Neil Diamond's 12 Songs, Cassidy's I'm a Hustla, Kings of Leon's Aha Shake Heartbreak, and, appropriately, the Bad Plus' Suspicious Activity and the Coral's Invisible Invasion, among others. Yea Sony really did screw themselves on this one

They best face it: there's NO WAY to stop piracy. They can spend millions, they can sue fans, it won't matter. Piracy will always be there.

Tossers.

I havent taken any consoles online and Im not really bothered about it either. It would be nice to get the extra content for some games but I wont be pushed into paying to take a console online by the same companies that make the games with content thats only unlockable by going online.

Now if I could do it for nothing then I would. The xbox needs chipping before you can get it on XBConnect so thats out the window and the PS2 needs a £30 adaptor.

Maybe the new ones will have a built in method of doing it but I'll be fucked if Im paying £50 just to play M$ Xbox games online.

SH, you don't need to get the xbox chipped to get it modded, but you will need access from one to get an unmodded one done though. There are a few games which you can exploit, you download these particular saves for these games and transfer them to your machine via the memory card then using that game you can access the xbox as if it was chipped. There is a little more to it than just that. Just read up on soft mods. I'll be soft modding the next one i get (hopefully by xmas for my room). We have 2 here and use them as media centers to play all our music and movies stored on my Arcade PC server.

Hi JB

I've looked into softmods before but I would like to get the whole new dash that Damian had installed on his Xbox with emulators and the whole shabang!

His has a button on the front to disable the chip so it can be taken onto Xbox live if he wants it to be.

I'd like to get that sort of a deal I think.

Once you mod the box you can put whatever dash board that you want (you will need to flash the rom though). We have ours booting straight into Xbox Media Center. You can do anything from it. We have one box that is chipped permanently on and the other you have to hold the power button down a second or 2 to turn the chip on. I wouldn't bother with live, my brother hardly ever plays on it anyway. If you upgrade your HDD they can sense it and ban you even if your chip is off. Our hdds are stock as we keep all the games on discs (i've only came across about 5 games that couldn't be put onto a single layer dvd)and use my PC as the main storage server.
