Looney Tunes!

Postby adidas on Wed Nov 09, 2005 11:50 pm

I just bought the latest edition of the Looney Tunes Golden Collection on DVD (vol 3) Each volume is four discs. I acquired the first two volumes by other means, so I decided to buy volume 3. This is the first time I've ever purchased a DVD.

So I got it today UPS, and first thing I do when I get in the door I put disc one in.

What am I greeted with? Whoopi Goldberg giving a disclaimer about racist jokes in the set. Even before the menu comes on.

I'm all for unedited LT cartoons, but I don't need to be preached to about how this type of humor was "unacceptable then and unacceptable now" and that it is included because it is "an important part of our history which we shouldn't forget"

So I turn the box over, and it says "New introduction by Whoopi Goldberg" Yeah. Nice intro.

and "Intended for adult collection only, may not be suitable for children"

May not be suitable for children? I grew up on these cartoons. Just because it has so called 'racist' jokes I shouldn't show it to kids? What about it being an important part of history?

It makes me wish I would have just got this off usenet too.

The rediculous thing is that 99% of people probably wouldent have even noticed or cared if it didn't have a black woman wagging her finger about it at the start of the disc, the apparently racist overtones of the odd bit of blackface or the occasional slanty-eyed impression went completely over my head when I was a kid. It wasent any different to me then an Irishman being shown as a drunk lepracaun or a russian being shown as an angry commie.

White humans are almost always portrayed as either complete morons or evil villians in Looney Toon cartoons, yet I don't see Warner rolling out a famous honkey to apolagise for it.

Yea I grew up on these as well. Truly sad that kids today can't see such top quality toons :(

Also, vol 1 has some censorship in it.

I think my Dad might still have some old original VHS tapes of these old cartoons. I remember one with this little black savage in it, I should get up in the attic and have a look.

I know for sure the one where Tom gets an arrow on his tale and burnt to look like negro was changed so that the Indian feathers stay. I'm not sure if there was more.

I think in vol 2 they "selected" episodes so they don't worry about content.

DOH

damn I don't know why I typed that I was thinking about something else

I think it's because they're going to put her in the next Tom and Jerry set to comment on the mammy. That's probably why I thought of that.

Yea if memory serves I think in vol 1 they also "selected" episodes much like they did in vol 2. But in the Tom and Jerry series they weren't as careful and censored toons made it in.

But damn to put Whoopie Goldberg in it is enough to put you off the set :x

In the Disney Treasures (which are all awesome sets) they put Leonard Maltin telling people not to get offended different times whaaa whaaa.

Annoying but at least much better Whoopie Goldberg

It's not even her real name. Her name is Caryn Elaine Johnson. I guess she believes the "Goldberg" name will land her more jobs in Hollywood (which is probably true).

Sadly, in America most babies are circumcised, Jewish or not. Which is sad but perhaps an indication of who’s in charge? Thankfully mine is intact. Besides the fact that it’s actually BETTER for it to be uncut and makes no sense to actually have it snipped, for many girls that see it, turns out actually the first uncut one they’ve ever seen

I once asked a muslim if they believed god made them in his image. She said yes so I asked her why she was gonna have a piece of her son removed when he was born.

I like how this thread has managed to cover liberal disclaimers, cartoon censorship, Jews controlling hollywood, circumcision and Muslim hypocrites in less the a page.
