A new client called µTorrent has entered, and I seriously recommend you dump whatever you are using and switch to it now.

* Multiple simultaneous downloads
* Smart bandwidth usage
* File level priorities
* Configurable bandwidth scheduling
* Global and per-torrent speed limiting
* Quickly resumes interrupted transfers
* UPnP support (WinXP only)
* Supports popular protocol extensions
* Localized to different languages
* Typical memory use less than 6 MB
* Incredibly small: 98 KB

Has many more features than that of course, including a full weekly scheduler (for those that have limits imposed during peak hours etc) which I have never seen before.

Their claim of typical memory usage will obviously differ dependant on how many torrents are active, but for example Bit Comet is using 80MB + with only twelve tasks so I expect it to be significantly lighter.

Will switch over permanently once my downloads are finished, then will (hopefully) be able to seed the rest to my standard 110% with µT.

No need to do that were, the only mention you'll find from them is clients that are banned (i.e BitComet is banned on Pedro).

I switched over early, and it has accepted all the torrents I had without complaint (mass re-named a few .bc!).

So far with 12 torrents, RAM usage is 3.9MB. Max I have seen is 6.8, lowest is 1.9, it is still hashing the torrents so I'll see what is stabilises to.

Wow from the title of that post it sounded like something bad!

My wallace&gromit dvd should be done by the time I get home. I'll have a look at this new one.

Cant use BT on the new PC anyway as it crashes the thing. That might just be BitComet though but I dont wanna use that PC for that sort of thing anyway. I use the other one and then transfer over the network.

Haze there is something seriously wrong with your system if that causes a crash. You should fix the problem instead of evading it :p

Nah its not something seriously wrong. There is a proper reason for it and I just cant remember what it is now....

Its the same thing that used to cause my 98 machine to lock up when I had some torrents going with BitComet.

Im not the only one it happens to either.

Oh I dunno, theres no real difference between my PC and the old Athlon in terms of software. After a clean format it still does it.

Fuck it. Doesnt do it with anything else at all!

Damian, come round my house and work your techno magical wizardry on my PC ;)

Better still, should hopefully be buying some wheels soon, I'll come round to yours with my PC and we can have a look at it :D

uTorrent Rules

Postby GeorgeJ on Sat Nov 05, 2005 12:30 am

Been using ABC and Bitcomet for a while now but this new uTorrent is simply amazing. Small memory usage, tiny 98k executable + has all the top features from the 'best' clients all included. This for me has been a godsend since I've never been happy with any of the clients I had previously used. Finally a worthy client and goodbye to ABC, and Bitcomet R.I.P. As to Azureus while it had loads of nice features it was written in horrible java.... so performane was uber slow not to mention made system sometimes slow to a crawl... one of my pet peeves about Azureus.

My firewalls hated Azureus. It didnt like the fact that it was using java to access the internet and nothing I could ever do, even setting the PC as a DMZ would help. I just never got a green light out of it.
Bit Tornado works fine for me but I have to try this out. Got a bit caught up over the weekend with family, fireworks, SSX On Tour and CoD2
