Pinch Punch, first day of the month!

Postby Silverhaze on Thu Sep 01, 2005 9:09 am

Ok so since nobody has posted in like forever...apart from the bot of course which Adidas was most upset about ;)

Im ordering my new PC tonight so hopefully it should come on Saturday provided I dont find that they have gone out of stock on the only day I wanted to buy it that is...

Ive already downloaded Half LIfe 2 and Doom 3 for it but I thought I would ask everybody's opinions on anything else I should try and get to test on it.
I wouldnt mind one of those new Unreal Tournament games but I'd also like to get UT2002 or UT2003 too so that I can play them over the network. Anything newer than that and the old Athlon2k wont handle it.

So, anybody else have any good reccomendations?

Got a bit of a wait for Black & White 2 yet.

If your PC can play Doom 3, then you're well ahead of me. I really don't have much to suggest except maybe Far Cry? Though I've never tried it myself.

UT2004 isn't so power hungry on the lower settings and would probably work okay on the Athlon 2k, it's a brilliant multiplayer game and worth a try. Far Cry is ok and you might want to play it before Doom 3 so you can really appreciate how damn good Doom is. Also Fable has just been released on PC, wicked game!

Well it says it should be able to play Doom 3. For all those that missed it last time, here are the specs and the description.

"Titan Vantage" AMD Athlon 64 3200+ System (FS-009-OK)
If you are looking for high performance stylish looking system without the inflated cost then the new Titan is ideal. Titan Vantage is powerful enough for any task including all the latest games currently out too such as DOOM 3 and Half Life 2 offering an ultimate gaming experience and feature extremely low noise levels, you won't even know its on.

- AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice CPU
- AMD approved cooler
- Asus A8N-E nForce4 Ultra PCI-Express Motherboard
- GeIL 1GB Value (2x512MB) DDR PC3200 CAS2.5 Dual Channel Kit
- 160GB Western Digital Serial ATA-2 8mb Cache Hard Drive
- Leadtek GeForce 6800 256MB DDR3 PCI-Express Graphics Card
- Pioneer DVR-110 16x16 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter
- Onboard 6 Channel Audio
- Floppy Drive
- Arctic Cooling Silentium Silent Midi Tower Case
- Seasonic True 350W Silent ATX Power Supply

Its £645 and I have to pay and extra £25 to get it delivered on a Saturday. If I order it tonight it will hopefully come this weekend.

Thanks for the info Ad and Zep, I should give Farcry a go and I think UT2k4 too.

Fable has been released yeah but its one meaty mofo of a download!!! I might have to wait until I get the PC before downloading that because I'd rather get a DVD copy than a CD copy and if any file is over 4gig then the 98 machine wont be able to download it. I do wanna try it out....oh hang on a sec....Ive been thinking about A bard's tale all this time. Duhhh.
Hmm Fable is a def then.

So Zep you think Doom3 is good? Ive heard mixed reviews, some say it a big pile of poop. I just wanna see the gfx quality.

Ok heres a fucking dilema I didnt forsee. The next model up.

ITs quite a bit more expensive, about £110 more but for the £787.58 for the PC and the delivery plus VAT you get the following:

"Titan Vantage" AMD Athlon 64 3500+ System (FS-004-OK)
If you are looking for high performance stylish looking system without the inflated cost then the new Titan is ideal. Titan Vantage is powerful enough for any task including all the latest games currently out too such as DOOM 3 and Half Life 2 offering an ultimate gaming experience and feature extremely low noise levels, you won't even know its on.

- AMD Athlon 64 3500+
- AMD approved cooler
- Asus A8N-E nForce4 Ultra PCI-Express Motherboard
- GeIL 1GB Value (2x512MB) DDR PC3200 CAS2.5 Dual Channel Kit
- 250GB Western Digital Caviar SE16 16mb Cache SATA-2 Hard Drive
- XFX GeForce 6800 GT 256MB DDR3 PCI-Express Graphics Card
- Pioneer DVR-110 16x16 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter
- Onboard 6 Channel Audio
- Floppy Drive
- Arctic Cooling Silentium Silent Midi Tower Case
- Seasonic True 350W Silent ATX Power Supply

Now they still dont give you more than a 350w power source but you do get a much better HD, a slightly faster CPU and the bigger brother of the gfx card. Ive checked some sites and the GeForce6800 GT has a faster GPU and bigger pipelines but is all that worth the extra £110.

The first is £670.08 all in, compared to the £787.58 all in for the other. I have about £1100 in my account and I get paid on friday too. Im so fucking tempted its not even funny

What would YOU do? :?:

I think if you are going to spend £645 on a PC, £110 extra seems so little for such a good graphics card and a mama jamma hard drive. Saying that though, £110 could pay rent for a couple of months or the TV licnece or beer or a good night out.

Oh, and I personaly thought that Doom 3 was a more enjoyable game than Half-Life 2. The atmosphere just kicks ass (in Doom). After you complete it you unlock Nightmare mode which makes for a different experince altogether (you get given this cube thingy which kills any enemy with one hit but needs to charge on 7 kills and your health constantly depletes until you kill something so you HVAE to run to areas with lots of bad guys). The AI in HL2 is a bit over rated and it seems to end just as it got really really good. It sets up HL3 perfectly.

Cool yeah thats what I was thinking about the price too. That does seem like a much better system. Ive been looking at some reviews for the 6800GT but its all gibberish to me really and most of them use a test system like a P4 2.5ghz rather than a 64bit system.

What system do you have Zep? Also, what resolution do you play HL2 and Doom3 at and do you get a pretty much perfect frame rate?

All these reviews that go on about 50fps rates and higher confuse me. I was of the opinion that it was something like around 24fps that gave you a smooth game. Films are only played at that speed arent they??

So, what the hell is the point of going so much higher?? The GeForce6800GT gets a frame rate of 110fps on Call of Duty LOL

I need some Layman's reviews.

games like call of duty maxes out the performance of your videocard..especially for online play(which is made to do).If your just going for a single game, then it should be fine..

You should easily be able to play Doom3 at just about any resolution you need, but not quite at full whack as a graphic card needs 512MB memory for that.

I suppose you might as well spend the extra on the upgraded rig also.

Nice post time by the way!

doom3..very evil on requirements:

need kickass processor
kickass vidoecard
kickass ram

i wont be bothered playing it..cause the requirements are insane :(

Well it played fine at 1280 x 1024 on my FX5900 which only has 128MB of RAM. 512MB is only needed for the very highest setting.

Just tried the F.E.A.R demo. It kicked the shit out of my system all 'cause I got scummy 512MB RAM. This game looks wicked, no stealth bull shit, just blowing stuff up AND it has scary ghosts. wooooooo!

Haze, get ready for some serious shit with that machine!

Hehehe sweet!!

I'll make that my first game download on the new PC then.

After Ive installed XP SP2, Some kind of virus software, Adaware and Firefox.

Fable is almost 40% done now. Hopefully I should have it by tomorrow morning. Then I can start on some UT and other bits.

Well FUCKING CUNT!!! Ive just checked my email and theres a message from overcockers saying my transaction has been blocked by my bank. This is despite the fact that I actually phoned my bank and warned the useless cunts that I would be making a large purchase this week.
So...Ive phoned my useless bank and told them to unblock it, then took an hour to get through to overcockers who told me that they were also having technical issues or some other pathetic excuse which basically ends up with me having to wait a whole week more to get my fucking computer. As you can probably tell, Im extremely fucking pissed off about this.

It might not be too bad. I calmed down after a while and decided that at least I'd have some extra time to download stuff before it came.

When I got home and checked my email there was a Shipment Confirmation email saying my order had been packed and was awaiting shipment.

Theres a glimmer of hope on the horizon still.
