NZ: You can copy CDs legally

Postby Class316 on Thu Mar 25, 2004 3:12 pm

New Zealanders are to be given the legal right to copy CDs, but under condition that they own a genuine, original recording. It will also be made possible for consumers to shift the format of music from CD to MP3 without infringing copyright.

The New Zealand government will introduce a 'fair use' clause into their 1994 Copyright Act, allowing the transferring of audio across mediums for personal use.

Despite opposition from the record industry, the New Zealand Government say that they cannot see any way to reasonably enforce any law prohibiting an individual from transferring music they already own across formats.

For this reason, they have abandoned the draconian laws of the US and much of Europe and made it explicitly clear that if you own a legitimate CD in New Zealand, you're not a criminal if you copy it for convenience.
