USA: Swap a file, Go to jail (plus more news bits)

The DOJ (Department of Justice) is going to make it a criminal offense for U.S. citizens to swap copyrighted material over the internet. http://news.com.com/2100-1023-954591.html?tag=fd_top

On Tuesday, the RIAA asked a federal judge in Washington, D.C., for an order compelling Verizon Communications to reveal the name of a customer accused of illegally trading hundreds of songs. Citing privacy concerns and potential legal liability, Verizon has refused to comply with a subpoena the RIAA sent last month. http://news.com.com/2100-1023-954658.html

File-swapping company StreamCast Networks released a long-awaited new version of its Morpheus software Tuesday, in a bid to recapture its once-unrivaled online popularity. Consumer reviews on Download.com, a software aggregation site owned by CNET Networks, publisher of News.com, were initially mixed. A good number of people praised quick downloads with the new architecture. Many complained that it used too many computer resources and returned few search results, however.

at an annual conference organized by the Progress & Freedom Foundation, News Corporation President Peter Chernin decried the "enormous amount" of worthless content online. He also predicted that without new laws to stave off illicit copying, News Corp.'s vast library of movies may never be made available in digital form.

"The vast potential of broadband has so far benefited nobody as clearly as it's benefited downloaders of pornography and pirates of digital content," Chernin told an audience of about 200. News Corp. owns 20th Century Fox and Fox Television. http://news.com.com/2100-1023-954651.html?tag=fd_top

Will that stop anybody? I doubt it. It's a criminal offense to trade warez too. Big deal :p

Keep your vast library of movies, they probably suck anyway.

This isn't exactly new. They've been trying to do all sorts of stuff for years. It'll never get rid of Roms/Warez/MP3s, it just slows it down a bit.
