From the sound of the barebones kit, I wouldn't mind getting my hands on one. Depending on how much the upgrade to C2D and 1 GB RAM is. Of course there would have to be room in the case for that optical drive :)

LAS VEGAS--Asus' Eee PC and Everex's CloudBook aren't the only ones pushing down the price of affordable, open-source PCs.

Shuttle introduced its $199 KPC Linux PC here on Tuesday. The company didn't have it on display on the actual floor of the convention halls here at the Consumer Electronics Show (too late did I find out you had to zip over to a private suite at the Bellagio for a look-see), but booth representatives were happy to talk details. "It's meant for simple tasks," said sales rep James Wonpu.

It'll have an Intel Celeron processor, a 945GC chipset, 512MB of memory and either a 60GB or 80GB hard drive. What it won't have: an optical drive or a PCI Express slot. Despite that, it's a pretty good-looking box, and comes in red, blue, white, and black, each with a different icon stamped on the front.

Shuttle also says there will be a $99 barebones version of the KPC. That version will have the option of upgrading to a Core2Duo processor and 1GB of memory. Both will be available for purchase near the end of the first quarter.

Just be sure the memory can be expanded well beyond that ;)

Somewhat on topic, I've become sick of thinking/talking about building a low powered Auth/Resource/DNS/Torrent server and *should* be building one within the next month or so. The main item holding me back somewhat is a software solution that won't be prohibitively expensive considering the relatively low client load it would need to handle.

Case: http://www.chenbro.com/corporatesite/pr ... ?serno=100 Motherboard and CPU: http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/mainb ... ard_id=550 Primary HDD: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=336

Add to that 2GB DDR2 and a spare slimline dvdrom I can use to install software. I would just pop in a normal 13w 500GB hdd as a secondary and only have that used for bi-weekly backups. Torrents use up a lot of I/O so would be better to slap them on the primary along with system which is bound to be spun up most of the time at 8w or less. I'm aiming to hit under 30, but really have to see as it is hard to estimate accurately.

I will be part of a torrent swarm ;) like any other client, not hosting the torrent files themselves. Want to run torrents on lp server so I can stop leaving this beast on 24/7.
