DAPHNE Laser Disc games

Postby Silverhaze on Wed Jun 15, 2005 11:48 am

Am I right in thinking that the LD images for these games are massive?

I wouldnt mind taking a look at that cliff hanger game and possibly Dragon's Lair too. I had that on CDi.

There’s actually no such thing as “LD images”. Since LDs are basically analog, there’s no way to have a 1:1 copy or image like you would a DVD or CD.

You need to things to run these games (besides the emu):

There’s the roms. The roms are less than 100kb.

Then there’s mpegs. These mpegs are created from the LDs (but are not 1:1 copies of course). And if I’m not mistake these are up to 1GB.

I’m not sure where these can be obtained but from what I heard usenet is a pretty good source (I don’t have them myself as I’ve never gotten around to downloading them, though I wouldn’t mind to).

Also, it should be noted that the reason MAME doesn’t support these LD games is because you can’t have a 1:1 copy and therefore it won’t be accurate and MAME wants to have things exactly like they were. Though you would probably never detect the difference with human perception technically it won’t be the same. Not saying I agree with this logic, but that’s MAME’s reasoning.

I gather that its actually more to do with the lack of a suitable video codec with a compatable licence then anything.

These DVDs suck as they're not emulated. They use their own video and code.

What format are they were?

The DVD ROM versions can be ripped into a MPEG for Daphne with the dvd2daph utility, but your SOL if you have the video versions as they apparently don't have all the footage from the original LDs.

Sounds like the DVD Video and not the DVD Rom.

Awww such a shame. I never did play the arcade version although I saw people playing it. Not really the same thing though.

bit prob with the dvd version is that once you make your "move" there is a massive delay then the arcade one..quite annoying actually...

The DVD video version can’t be used for emulation. The DVD-Rom version can if you covert and rip it.
