Mofo MAME WIP update

Postby RabidYak on Sat Jul 28, 2001 11:51 pm

Helluva big update at the MAME WIP page, heres what got my attention -

- Various broken drivers and crashes sorted
- ND-1 driver optimised
- The previously posted M-92 sound decryption
- Stroff submitted a 3D-less WIP Namco System 21 driver (Air Combat, Starblade)
- Robocop protection cracked

Interesting to see some more 3D stuff being worked on, despite he sort of power youd need to emulate whats on that board in ANY emulator.

Damn, how long do we have to wait for Starblade, and would a 2ghz run it?

Probably quite a while and not likely, to qoute Namco museum "more graphics chips than any other System in the universe".

I know it goes against everything that the mame team stand for so I wouldnt ever expect them to do it but wouldnt it be nice if somebody made an emulator with hardware support for all those 3D arcade games we like. Just so that we could play the games again forgetting for a time that the game isnt being run exactly as the original board would have done it. Hard/Race Drivin would be some of the first on my list.

Excellent news about the M92 sound decryption though! Hot stuff!

Hard and Race Drivin probably couldent be done througth hardware accelerators if somebody wanted to. The graphics are almost totally generated though code, maths and processing rather then purpose-made 3D hardware (Hence the 4 CPUs that the board has - 1 to drive the game, 1 for poly handling, 1 for maths and 1 for pixel-pushing).

Its getting to the point now where stuff cant be emulated on slower systems no matter how optimised or hardware-assited the emulator is. Stuff like Atari Poly games, Sys32, ST-V/Saturn and Strata/IT just cant be done on lower end systems because of the sort of hardware and/or processing power they use.

Ahh Mr Yak, once again you dash my dreams onto the sharp, jagged rocks of your emulation knowledge.
