MAME 0.61 Hates Me...

Postby neon_sonic on Tue Aug 20, 2002 10:01 pm

I'm having trouble with MAME 0.61. I don't know what the heck it is. Whenever I click on the program, this DOS windows pops up and closes itself. That's it. MAME 32 runs fine on my machine. It's an AMD Athlon XP, so I don't see why it wouldn't be working.

This may sound like a shocking idea, but you could try reading the instructions.

You have to use command line paramaters or a front end unless you're using MAME32, I would stick with MAME32.

If you want to use mame at the command prompt you have to create a shortcut to the exe and specifiy in the properties tab of the shortcut to "not exit when finished".

I guess I'll just stick with MAME32. At least that works, for me. But what about the compatibility problems?

Well, if it's an older version, I figured it wouldn't be compatible with as many games.

Why would you use an older version? MAME32 supports all the same games that the official build of MAME does. It's the same thing with a GUI added on.

When MAME is updated, so is MAME32

Ok, I'm confused. Will someone just explain this to me? What's the difference between MAME32 and Mame 0.61? I don't really get it.

We they are essentially the same thing but MAME32 is written and programmed with a front end or GUI to run in Windows and make everything easier to use. No command lines or anything like that. its all controlled from the interface.

The other version is less resource intensive but uses a DOS command screen in which you have to enter command lines to play games and set up options. Something like -Load Frogger -Sound 1 -Control Config1

Ok so that command line totally wouldnt work but thats vaguly similar to what you have to write.

I think I've covered about everything although I am sure Old Mr Yak will whip out his red pen and start correcting all my deliberate mistakes. :D

Pretty much right there SH. :D

MAME is the standard stock version with operates from a command line.

MAME32 is exactly the same thing, but with a GUI grafted on the front that does all the legwork.

Hence with standard MAME you specify your options with and play the games using the ini file and by running it with the appropiate commands. With MAME32 you check boxes, select stuff from menus and double click on icons. Both are windows programs.

They are both the same program, built from the same source code, doing the same things. MAME32 0.61 does all the same stuff as MAME 0.61, just with a nice easy-to-use interface slapped onto it.

OH! Ok. I was thinking of it like MAME 0.32 and MAME 0.61. I'm gonna stick with MAME32. I hate using commands and stuff like in DOS. Thanks for the help.

Funnily enough, there is no 0.32 version of MAME as they skipped it over to avoid confusion with MAME32.
